The City of Newcastle believes the community wants to see change.

"We know the community wants to have good quality infrastructure – like cycleways, roads, footpaths and libraries. We also know our infrastructure needs a significant investment to bring it up to the standard desired by the community," says the General Manager of The City of Newcastle Phil Pearce.

"Council can provide this critical infrastructure for the future if the community backs us by supporting a rate increase. This will provide an injection of funds to deliver ten significant projects that will really see Newcastle change."

The projects deliver on the community's vision for the city developed after 18 months of extensive consultation culminating in the Newcastle Community Strategic Plan.

Phil Pearce, General Manager

The Draft Newcastle 2020 Carbon and Water Management Action Plan has been developed to lead our carbon mitigation and water management response into the next decade. The plan has an environmental and economic focus and targets the long-term management of energy, water and waste and their associated costs across Council's operations and within the residential sector, the education sector and the business sector of the Newcastle community.

While providing a response to climate change and water security, the Draft Carbon & Water MAP will also assist both Council and the Newcastle community to reduce our exposure to escalating energy and water prices. By driving opportunities to lower power and water bills through reductions in resource consumption and carbon emissions, this will assist Newcastle residents to manage their living costs while enabling the long-term sustainability of our organisation and our local education institutions, businesses and industries.

The Draft Carbon & Water MAP will assist us to work towards several of the strategic directions in the Newcastle 2030 Community Strategic Plan. It also seeks to position our city as a global showcase for innovative technologies and behavioural change programs that have the capacity to be adopted into the mainstream.

Newcastle 2030 is the process of developing a long-term shared vision and 10-year Community Strategic Plan for the Newcastle local government area. It is setting the strategic direction for where the Newcastle community would like to be in 20 years.

The draft Newcastle Community Strategic Plan outlines the community goals and the actions we need to take over the next 10 years to move towards achieving our shared vision. It builds on and integrates current initiatives being undertaken by Council and other government and non-government agencies.

This process is contributing to Newcastle being a stronger, more resilient community which is growing from the inside out and building on our local strengths and assets. It is enabling us to plan more holistically for the future, taking into account social, environmental and economic considerations and providing a clear direction for government and services operation.

Hunter St has always been recognised as the iconic civic, retail and entertainment mainstreet of Newcastle City Centre.

Over the past several decades a number of social, environmental and economic challenges have resulted in a significant decline in the vitality of Hunter St

Newcastle City Council (NCC) recognises that for Hunter St to return to being a jewel in the crown of the city centre, it requires NCC, the community as well as key private and public stakeholders to work together to make change happen.

NCC has begun a process to develop the Hunter St Revitalisation Master Plan (HSRM). This process acknowledges that positive change can take place quickly as part of a small scale place making approach as well as through more significant interventions at the broad strategic level and taking a number of years to achieve.

The place making approach is a process committed to the creation of places - public spaces that are meaningful to the people who use them, contribute to a sense of belonging in the community and are pleasurable to be in therefore attracting more people. Places have their own life, story and distinct identity that in turn draws appropriate businesses that share and build that identity.
