This consultation has concluded.
Over the past two years The City of Newcastle has been asking your opinion on how you want Newcastle to look in the future. You've told us about a number of priorities you'd like Council to address. These include the revitalisation of Hunter Street and the coast, new and upgraded cycleways, upgrade of important cultural and recreational facilities, including Blackbutt, swimming pools, libraries and the Art Gallery. These works are currently unfunded.
The question is - How can we fund these important works, continue to have the level of Council services the community has come to expect and maintain rates at an affordable amount?
Council proposes to seek a one-off (single year) 5% special rate variation above the forecasted allowable 3% rate cap set by the State Government. This will enable the Council to increase much needed funding to provide civic upgrades and renewal projects and deliver on the 10 year community strategic plan.
The proposed special rate variation is a part of the Council's response to resourcing Newcastle 2030.
Your Thoughts Newcastle
Before Council can make any decisions, we need your views as well as your support to apply for a Special Rate Variation (a rate increase). Your feedback is important. We would like to hear your thoughts and encourage you to leave them in our guest book or by clicking on the Your Thoughts Newcastle Tab below.

Would you like Council to come and talk to your community or business group?
The consultation process includes presentations to community and business groups, information sessions, an online discussion forum and a community survey. I encourage you to invite a representative of The City of Newcastle to address your organisation about the rate variation proposal. Please contact Council on 4974 2238 to make a booking.
